The Pistorius family will have to wait a little longer for their prodigal son to return to the fold, as his much anticipated release tomorrow has been stalled for up to four months while the parole board reviews his case. This announcement followed what seemed like an 11th hour intervention by the Justice and Correctional Services Minister, Michael Masutha, […]
SUZANNE'S WORLD
SUZANNE'S WORLD is the new all-encompassing umbrella for features, blogs and interviews either new or archived on my website. It is also the new home of what was Melville News.
Above: The pin board in my office is a collage of of my world...
For a long time I've been searching for a name that immediately conveys, but doesn't limit, the scope of editorial content I publish on my website. As simple a task as one may think it to be, I have rejected every suggestion for not meeting those criteria. "What's in a name?" asked more than one friend, echoing Juliet in Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. ("What's in a name? that which we call a rose by any other name would smells as sweet," says Juliet in a passage reflecting her wishful thinking.)
As Juliet discovered, there's a lot in a name, and in my case, the perfect solution wasn't presenting itself. Suzanne's World is an honest and broad attempt to to capture the spirit of this page. As the pin board reveals, in my case it is a personal if somewhat random collection of people and places in my professional and private life, which is intended to be symbolic.
It is here too where colleagues and friends will be encouraged to share their original, thought-provoking and entertaining words to engage readers old and new.
And now that I have settled on Suzanne's World, I hope to give up stressing about names and to get on with the writing. I'm working towards forming partnerships with other sites, which will provide yet more options for the short-attention-span age in which we find ourselves.
I'm happy to say that the launch of this new segment coincides with a feature and an extended paragraph (I'm being facetious) from John Miller, an old friend and colleague who lives in Wales... but let him tell his own stories.
Welcome to my world.
THE MRA INJECTED WITH NEW LIFE
AGMs don’t usually attract crowds let alone on a cold Johannesburg night. For a change and for change, the MRA AGM on August 6 was well attended by the people of Melville determined to make a difference. It was a lively occasion, as far as these things go. Opening the meeting, one of the co-chairmen […]
PROWRITE ENTERS THE 21ST CENTURY
It’s time. These are words I’ve been repeating to myself for far too long. So the time is now to go public with my new-look website. The truth is that I’m a digital migrant but I’ve been hoping to learn by osmosis everything about the technology and interactivity of this site. I get it, it’s […]
IS JC THE NEW HOPE FOR THE MRA?
JAY CEE is the mysterious new guy on the block who exploded into the Melville consciousness via social networks. If you’re a regular on Facebook, Twitter and WhatsApp, you know who I mean. By Suzanne Brenner I’d become curious about the ubiquitous Jay Cee or JC as I now refer to him. We’d corresponded and […]
LIFE IS AN EDIBLE GARDEN
MELVILLE NEWS in any guise wouldn’t be the same without Jane Griffiths on board. Here she tells how to convert lawn into an (almost) instant edible garden. Setting up a vegetable garden can be a daunting prospect, especially if you have never gardened before or did not grow up in a gardening family. The following […]
